Upgrading Your Lighting Control

Grafik Eye, older HomeWorks, Rako, iLight, or simply switches and dimmers, can usually be upgraded using the existing wiring.

Many lighting control systems were designed for halogen, not LEDs, and parts and support are getting harder to find. Many houses have nothing but switches and dimmers.

After nearly four decades working inside these installations, we know what to keep, what to change, and how to improve both the lighting and the control in a house you already live in.

Older Lutron systems

Grafik Eye and older HomeWorks

Grafik Eye, HomeWorks Interactive, Illumination and QS, and the original RadioRA are often still running, but parts are scarce and not all were designed for LEDs. Many can move to HomeWorks QSX without replacing everything. We keep what's worth keeping and plan the rest, in stages if you prefer.

Rako, iLight and other systems

If support for your system has dried up, we replace it with Lutron, using the existing wiring wherever possible. You get new keypads, a fully supported system, and the option to add Lutron blinds, Ketra and Orluna CCX later.

Houses with switches and dimmers

RA3 with Vierti hybrid keypads turns ordinary switches into full lighting control, using the existing wiring. One keypad can replace a bank of switches, room by room, at your own pace.

Upgrading the lighting itself

Swapping halogen lamps for LEDs on an older dimming system often causes flicker, buzzing or lights that won't dim properly. It's usually fixable without starting again, and we deal with it every week.

To go further, Ketra downlights fit into a finished ceiling, and Orluna CCX can turn one existing cable into several layers of light.

We survey it

The system, wiring and lighting, on site.

03

Honest advice

What to keep, what to change, and a clear proposal.

04

Planned around you

All at once, or room by room.

We come back

To fine-tune, once you've lived with it.

Send us photos of your system

It's the quickest way for us to understand what you have. Photograph a few keypads or switches, and any control panels or dimmer racks (often in a cupboard, loft or plant room).

Email them to info@futurelightdesign.co.uk with your postcode and a line on what isn't working and we'll call you back.

Questions we're often asked

Can I keep my existing wiring?

In almost every case, yes. We confirm it at the survey.

Can it be done in stages?

Yes. Many clients start with the main living areas and add more over time.

Will the keypads change?

Yes, to current Lutron keypads, engraved to order and approved by you before fitting.

Can you upgrade a system someone else installed?

Yes. Much of our upgrade work is on other companies' systems.

Tell us what you have

Send us a few photos of your keypads or switches and let us know what isn't working. We'll give you an honest view of what's worth keeping, and what isn't.
